Simply speaking, uveitis is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye called the “uvea.” The uvea includes the iris (like the gatekeeper of light), the ciliary body (helps the eye focus), and the choroid (supplies nutrients to the retina). After inflammation, it may also affect the retina and vitreous. Mild cases cause blurred vision, and severe cases can cause blindness. Doctors often compare it to a camera lens getting dust—once it’s dirty, the photos are unclear. When I was first diagnosed I didn’t understand these terms at all. The doctor said “intraocular inflammation,” and in my head it was like an invisible little flame; my family and I were very nervous.
